Precautions of IVF injection and side effects

What injections are given during IVF?

Ovulation Induction

Ovulation-inducing injections are often administered to stimulate follicle growth. Doctors can customize treatment plans based on a patient's age, antral follicle count (AFC), and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels to determine the most suitable stimulation protocol.

Trigger Shot

A trigger shot is administered after the follicles have matured. The trigger shot stimulates the ovaries to initiate ovulation. Within 36 hours of receiving the trigger shot, the follicles rupture, releasing the eggs, which facilitates the subsequent egg retrieval procedure.

Progesterone Injections (optional)

If a woman has insufficient progesterone during IVF treatment, it may affect the thickness of the uterine lining, resulting in difficulties with embryo implantation, bleeding, or even miscarriage. Therefore, depending on the patient's condition, the physician may prescribe progesterone supplements.

In an IVF cycle, the administration of ovulation-inducing injections typically begins around the 2nd to 3rd day of the menstrual cycle. Conventional ovulation-inducing injections often require daily administration to stimulate follicle growth, whereas long-acting injections can reduce the frequency of injections needed.

Side Effects of IVF Injections

The main component of ovulation-inducing injections is follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and they also contain luteinizing hormone (LH). After IVF injections, some possible side effects may include abdominal bloating, pelvic pain, stomach discomfort, nausea, headache, redness, swelling, and pain at the injection site, as well as breast tenderness. These symptoms, however, are usually mild and resolve quickly.

In very rare cases, some individuals may experience ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) due to excessive hormone stimulation. Symptoms of OHSS can include abdominal bloating, abdominal pain, thirst, nausea, reduced urine output, and difficulty breathing. Most patients recover within 1-2 weeks, but severe cases may require hospitalization for treatment.

Contraindications for IVF Injections

Couples can continue to have sexual relations while receiving ovulation-inducing injections. However, it is best to avoid eating stimulating foods like raw, spicy, or fried foods, as well as overeating or binge eating.

Furthermore, after receiving ovulation-inducing injections during IVF treatment, follicle stimulation may cause discomfort and bloating when the follicles mature. Vigorous exercise during this time period increases the risk of ovarian torsion. To avoid complications related to the ovaries, it is also advised to avoid activities that apply pressure to the abdominal area. Low-intensity exercises are preferable during the ovulation induction period.

More FAQs about IVF Injection

When should ovulation-inducing injections be given during IVF?

In IVF treatment, ovulation-inducing injections are typically begin on the 2nd or 3rd day of the menstrual cycle.

How long does the IVF injection take?

When using short-acting ovulation-inducing injections, they are usually given daily for an average of 8-10 days. For those who opt for long-acting ovulation-inducing injections, each injection has an ovarian effect for approximately 5-7 days, and usually only requires two injections.

How do I inject ovulation induction?

Ovulation-inducing injections are commonly administered subcutaneously, allowing the medication to be slowly absorbed through the subcutaneous microvessels and enter the bloodstream. It is recommended to inject them into the abdomen or buttocks. There is no need to rub or massage the area after the injection; simply applying light pressure to prevent bleeding is sufficient. It is recommended that individuals undergoing multiple cycles of treatment alternate injection sites to avoid the development of subcutaneous thickening or localized lumps caused by prolonged injections.
